Tech Daily Summary

Tech

Today's tech landscape is dominated by major AI model releases and regulatory developments, with OpenAI launching GPT-5.5 and China's DeepSeek previewing its V4 model. Meanwhile, prediction market platform Polymarket faces multiple controversies involving alleged manipulation and insider trading.

AI Model Wars Heat Up

The AI competition intensified as OpenAI unveiled GPT-5.5, calling it "a new class of intelligence for real work." The new model narrowly beats Anthropic's Claude Mythos Preview on benchmarks, retaking the lead for generally available LLMs.

China's DeepSeek also made waves by releasing a preview of its V4 model, claiming the open-source system can compete with leading closed-source models from US rivals including OpenAI, Anthropic, and Google. The company emphasizes major improvements in coding capabilities.

Anthropic revealed that recent Claude degradation complaints were likely caused by changes to the model's harnesses and operating instructions, addressing weeks of user concerns about reduced performance.

Polymarket Under Scrutiny

Prediction betting platform Polymarket faces multiple controversies involving alleged market manipulation. A US Special Forces soldier was arrested for allegedly making over $400,000 on bets related to the capture of Venezuelan president Nicolas Maduro using classified information he had access to through his military role.

In a separate incident, French authorities are investigating temperature manipulation at Charles de Gaulle Airport allegedly involving a hairdryer to rig temperature-based bets on the platform.

Tech Industry Layoffs Continue

The tech industry's cost-cutting measures accelerated with Meta announcing a 10 percent workforce reduction, eliminating about 8,000 jobs and 6,000 open positions as part of efficiency efforts and to fund AI investments.

Microsoft is offering voluntary buyouts to up to 7 percent of its US workforce, potentially affecting up to 8,750 employees who meet specific criteria regarding age and years of service.

Platform Changes and New Features

Instagram continues its competition with Snapchat by launching "Instants," a dedicated app currently being tested in Italy and Spain that focuses on disappearing photo sharing with 24-hour availability and one-time viewing.

Claude expanded its app integrations to include personal services like Spotify, Uber Eats, AllTrails, Instacart, and TurboTax, moving beyond work-focused applications to lifestyle apps.

X announced it's shutting down its Communities feature in May, citing insufficient usage despite the feature's potential for creating focused interest groups.
